Whakanuia!

I was invited by Orakei School to devise an art workshop and make a collaborative artwork with children aged 7-9.

We explored the theme of ‘celebration’ and the idea that a celebration is often acknowledged by a gathering. We created our artwork following a process that involved each student drawing objects from our environment and referencing found objects, flora and fauna which I had collected. Flowers, leaves, shells, insects and bones.

Inspired by their own drawings, the students created papercut silhouettes from black paper and I collaged their motifs all together to form a new picture.

I called our work Whakanuia! – to celebrate our whanaungatanga and the symbols that are unique to the children who made them.
