POLLY POCKET

Once upon a time, I was part of a fantastic team of talented folk designing toys in London.

As product manager and designer for the Polly Pocket toy brand, responsible for liaising with toy companies and attending international toy fairs worldwide, producing concept sketches, creating prototypes, designing colour palettes, creating stencil decorations, creating artwork for printed backgrounds, and preparing specifications for production in China.

Attending the annual American International Toy Fair in New York was an unforgettable experience.

My childhood in the South Pacific, with memories of snorkelling in Fiji, fishing in the Hauraki Gulf, my mum's elephant collection, a favourite Japanese Geisha doll, skateboarding in the 70s, my pen pals, a love of Paris, grandpa’s seahorse, and folk art — all inspired the toy themes I worked on.

My personal references reflected in the these toys by a girl riding a skateboard, seahorses and elephants; swimming with dolphins, lounging on a crescent moon, a Pacific island scene with turtles, Geisha in a Japanese tea house, a Swiss chalet with a snowman and reindeer; a Parisian apartment with Fifi and a couple of poodles; stencilled flowers and leaves; flower, shell, and leaf shapes; polka dots pyjamas… (❀‿❀)
